Our organization relies on the support of our generous donors who contribute both financially and through material donations. For instance, the average Habitat home in the U.S., which is a 1,200-square-foot house with three bedrooms, requires approximately 150 pounds of nails and 400 two-by-fours/sixes. We receive many of these materials through gifts and in-kind donations from our vendors. We value contributions of all sizes as they make a significant difference to us. We believe that everyone can give something, no matter how big or small. We would like to invite you to join our Square Foot Club if you are deeply interested in affordable housing and the Habitat mission and have a strong desire to help families in need of housing within Cheboygan County. By funding a square foot of our project or donating the cost of project materials, you will demonstrate your commitment to providing safe, simple, and affordable housing in our local neighborhoods. If 100 people donate $8 we could cover the cost of painting an entire Habitat house. If 50 people donated $20 we could cover the cost of ceiling fans in a Habitat house. If 12 people donated $50 each, that would cover the cost of counter tops for a Habitat house. If 5 people donated $1,000 each we could cover the cost of windows for a Habitat house. If 1 person donated a parcel of land, we have a starting point for a future home. Join Square Foot Club >Here<On April 1st a new fundraising campaign was launched called the 2024 Power of Home Michigan Campaign. This campaign is an opportunity to raise funds STATEWIDE to better help local Habitats, like us, to build more homes in their communities. Consumers Energy is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to match funds! They are offering $100,000 in match funds to affiliates which means that for every $2 raised in the campaign, it receives $1 in match funds.
This campaign gives us a great opportunity to build our home-building funds as the cost of building a home has gone up exponentially in the last few years. Every dollar raised helps us continue our mission of making safe, affordable housing for low-income families. And we’re already halfway to our initial goal of $10,000! To boost our fundraising and hopefully earn more funds, we decided to change our goal to $30,000. Every dollar counts for the construction of our new homes, and we need your help. Being semi-retired one of the things that my wife Mary and I wanted to do was visit our children. The only problem with that is our five children and their families are spread across the continental United States. Three of our children are west of the Mississippi. Realizing that it would be difficult to visit them for a weekend I decided to ask Mandy for some time off. Six weeks to be exact. I came up with an idea while I was on vacation to visit other Habitat Restores along our trip. I pitched the idea to Mandy and she agreed it was a good idea.
So on February 5, 2024 my wife, Mary, our two dogs Murphy and Freighter loaded the car and headed out on our trip. Our six week trip took us through fifteen states, Sixty-five hundred miles, visited three children and their families and stopped in on Four Habitat Restores. This is what I found out about those stores. The stores I visited were in Twin Falls, Idaho, two in Temecula, California, and one in Kansas City Missouri. Three of the Restores (Twin Falls, One of the Temecula Restores, and Kansas City) were very similar to our Restore. The retail space square footage was about the same. as ours. However, none of those three stores had a much warehouse space as our Restore. In fact two of the Restores (Temecula and Kansas City) had no warehouse space. Two of the Restores (Twin Falls and Temecula) used outside areas for sales space. One of the locations in Temecula was not referred to as a Restore but a Design Store. In that location all of the items were new. They were donated to the location by both Wayfair or Lowes. The retail space was five times the size of ours and the warehouse was similar to ours but they had tractor trailers on their loading dock full of items to be sold. Like us, all of the locations had staff that were attentive to the needs of the customers. They were very eager to speak with me. Many of the employees that I spoke with had been working at their store for many years. As for as pickups and and deliveries, all of the Restores were similar to our Restore except for the Temecula Design Store. All of their items are delivered by tractor trailer trucks from Wayfair and Lowes. What I was able to learn from my trip west is that Habitat Restores are very similar in size, in the items they sell, and the people they employee. They all appear to have the same goals to help the communities that they serve." -Ed Ryan, Truck Driver & Warehouse Associate Are you looking to upgrade your appliances? Our mattress sets are still coming from Sealy Restokraft out of Romulus, Michigan, though we are offering our customers something different than what we have had in the past.
We are offering a new single sided option call the Northville. We carry the Northville daily in a firm 11.5 inch mattress with the standard 8.75 inch box spring. We carry twin, full and queen sizes on our sales floor and can special order king sizes for customers that are looking for that size. The Northville comes in firm, medium, plush and euro top, which can be special ordered, though we will only be showcasing the firm. We are also offering the Sturgis mattress set. The Sturgis is a 6 inch, single sided mattress that is good for bunk beds, kids and occasional sleepers. The set comes with the standard 8.75 inch box spring. We will be carry a limited number of the Sturgis mattresses on the floor, mainly twins, but can special order all sizes as needed. For those customers needing a size or style not currently in our inventory requiring a special order, you can expect a 1-2 week turnaround time once we place the order. We are required to have a minimum order so that must also be considered when needing a special order. "Our Habitat Volunteers were the backbone of our builds this last year in Indian River at the two job sites on Will Drive. We would not have been able to build these two houses without their help. Our Volunteers were often assigned positions on the job sites of all natures and occasionally asked to handle tasks they had no experience in. They all managed to do an excellent job even though very few of them have been on a house build before. They would show up everyday ready to work and excited to be there. They understood what they were there for – to help in any means necessary. Their role often was not defined, before they showed up at the site, which means they really had no expectations for the day other than to take on whatever challenge needed to be done.
I would also say that our volunteers were always passionate about their work. Having people around that are passionate about what they are working on increased positivity on our job site environment. This had a positive impact on many other facets of our operations. For instance we had a fun job site that was productive as a result more volunteers came to help. The gift that our volunteers gave to our job sites this past year. By showing up, even on the hottest of days, has helped us greatly with our mission of supplying safe affordable housing to people who need it. To our volunteers, I salute you!” -Ron Hart, Construction Supervisor "Over the past few weeks, we have decided to take some of the furniture items that were not in great shape and turn them into repurposed paint projects for staff & volunteers. Going through the process of prepping, base coating, painting and sealing has been a learning experience, as I have never worked with chalk paint before. It’s very interesting to learn all the different things you can do with Dixie Belle’s selection of products and it’s amazing to see your vision of what something should look like come to life!
There are so many varieties of colors it can be difficult to pick just one. The metallic chalk paint colors are super pretty as well! I recently purchased a hutch that I’m going to repurpose with the Lucky Lavender chalk paint, I’m excited to see how it turns out! I definitely recommend anyone who enjoys repurposing furniture to stop into the ReStore, you never know what you could find! We are currently repurposing an armoire and turning it into a coffee bar; painting it a coffee bean red on the exterior and a subtle tan on the interior, I’m very excited to see the end result! It’s amazing what something could be turned into! Repurposing not only makes something look better but it also saves it from going into the landfill. Millions of furniture items tend to end up in the landfill because they are “old” or “out dated,” repurposing can turn something that looks “out of style” to something that is more “modern day”." -Anna Ellis, Sales Associate
